About a year ago the sad news spread across the globe. The beloved actor Alan Rickman has passed away. He has played countless roles in movies and theatre, but his most famous work was Severus Snape. Potteriana is a big part of my life and as trivial as it sounds, I don’t think I would have been the same person as I am now without it. So after I heard the news I decided to pay some sort of tribute which took a form of a 1-meter tall portrait. It took me a while to paint and to be honest with you as soon as I finished working on it I looked back and I had (and still have) absolutely no idea how on Earth did I manage to paint it… I have never tried to paint such a large portrait before and all my attempts on a smaller scale have not succeeded. I am very pleased with the outcome and I even managed to sell the painting to some gentleman from France. I hope he likes it!
It took me a couple of days to paint the whole thing and I have enjoyed it very much. Harry Potter theme music was playing all the way through which was great. It was a weekend dedicated purely to Potteriana. I know it might be a bit bias that I’ve only looked at one of Alan Rickman’s roles but that was the character that he has created that I felt like I knew personally. Probably because of the amount of times I have read the books. And even though I much prefer the books over the movies, I think he has managed to portray Severus Snape in his full glory. And in the end of the day that is one of the perks of being an actor! You can live multiple lives while being alive only once. “To live in hearts we livebehind is not to die”. Very inspiring quote in my opinion. And Alan Rickman will certainly live in hearts that he left behind. Only some people knew him in person and others knew him through his works.
I think artists of any kind is truly a unique profession. Those are the people who can alter one’s perception of reality and change one’s mood. I think that should be considered magic of its kind. Because if this is not magic, I don’t know what is.
I have always secretly dreamt to have an artistic career. I know, today’s society makes it very hard and unrealistic to have an artistic job and be capable of being certain that you won’t run out of money next week. But that’s why I call it a dream. I would love to wake up every morning and go to do my job with a gigantic smile on my face. “To do something well, you need to love what you are doing.” And there are so few artistic professionals todays who have made a living out of it compared to other industires.. Actors such as Alan Rickman himself truly have a wonderful life because they do what they love. And I think once you can say that about yourself, say without any second thoughts that you are happy in every aspect of your life including work, that’s when you can be consiered successful. That’s my meaning of life. Just be happy! In the end of the day that what matters the most.
This might not have been the cheeriest of the posts so far, but that’s what I was thinking about while painting the portait and I wanted to share my work and thoughts with you guys! I feel like without a story, be that only a paragraph long, the painting loks a bit empty.
